What is Radiofrequency treatment and how can it help with skin tightening? Radiofrequency (RF) treatment refers to the controlled application of RF energy, a form of electromagnetic energy, to the surface of the skin. RF energy has been used safely for many years in surgery but only recently in dermatology and cosmetic medicine. The application of RF energy causes bulk heating of the lower layers of the skin without causing any damage to the upper layer, or external surface, of the skin. Clinical research has shown that bulk heating of the connective tissue in the lower layers of the skin causes the skin tightening. Non-surgical skin tightening is achieved by the effect of heat on the collagen fibres which causes them to lose their long fibre structure and shrink into a more compact form. This causes an increased tension within the skin, which achieves the effect of tightening. Depending on the area treated, a visible skin tightening effect may be noted with the first few treatments. In addition, the heating results in the stimulation of new collagen production by the body’s own collagen producing cells. This effect is not clinically noticeable until about 8 weeks. We recommended that a minimum number of 6 sessions performed weekly is required for skin rejuvenation.
